Cervical Myelopathy is a spinal condition more common among the elderly. With ageing, the spine may develop degenerative changes in the joints that can lead to tightening of the spinal canal, which can eventually lead to the pinching of spinal cord. This condition of pinching of spinal cord is known as Cervical Stenosis and the compression of the cervical spinal cord as a result of spinal stenosis is called Cervical Myelopathy.
• Arm pain
• Parasthesia in hands and legs
• Numbness in the legs
• Disturbance in gait(Inability to walk at a brisk pace, walking imbalance)
• Deterioration in fine motor skills (such as handwriting or buttoning a shirt)
• Intermittent shooting pains into the arms and legs (like an electrical shock), especially when bending head forward.
It is a progressive condition that develops slowly, the symptoms may not rise for years and then difficulties may rise suddenly. Surgical decompression of the spinal canal is the only effective treatment to relieve the patient from the symptoms of Cervical Stenosis & Cervical Myelopathy.
The aim of cervical stenosis treatment is to prevent the progression of the condition and stabilize neurological condition of the patient. The surgical decompression can be performed through anterior (front) approach or posterior (back) approach depending upon the location of the majority of compression.
